3 Questions That Can Help You Determine When It’s Time to Replace Your Crown

You might remember your dentist saying something about eventually needing to replace your dental crown when you first received it. This makes sense – after all, nothing lasts forever. But you also know that these restorations can last anywhere between 10 and 15 years, sometimes longer. So how will you know it’s time to make an appointment with your dentist?

Sometimes it helps to simply ask the right questions! Here are three things you can ask yourself to determine whether your crown needs to be replaced.

Is Your Crown Uncomfortable?

If the area around your dental crown is more sensitive than usual or aches when you chew, you most likely need a replacement. Discomfort like this is usually caused by one of two problems: a crown that doesn’t fit quite right or one that is chipped or cracked. In both scenarios, the vulnerable tooth underneath your crown is more exposed to the elements than it otherwise would be, resulting in increased tenderness.

Are Your Gums Showing Signs of Irritation?

Maybe they’re a bit delicate to the touch, or maybe they’re red and puffy. If it’s time to replace your dental crown, your gums may even start to recede. Once again, damage or an improper fit can irritate your pink oral tissue.

Alternatively, there’s a chance you might have gum disease – particularly if you don’t brush and floss on a regular basis. When your gumline seems agitated, it’s best to ask your dentist for an emergency appointment, just in case.

Do You See Obvious Wear and Tear?

Small chips, dents, or even discoloration can indicate your crown has seen a lot of wear and tear. If you’re not satisfied with how your restoration looks, that’s a good enough reason to request a replacement. Plus, trying to push a worn out crown to the breaking point can result in dangerously jagged edges or painful toothaches, so getting a touch-up sooner than later is also in your best interest.

Did you answer “yes” to any of these three questions? Then call your dentist today! While getting an updated dental crown isn’t always a same-day urgency, it’s a good idea to make the swap as soon as possible. Even if it does turn out that your crown has several more years of life left, your dentist can help you diagnose and treat your symptoms. Contact them for all your oral needs, and they’ll make sure you’re well taken care of!
