Why Do Dental Implants Fail?

Dental implant placement is successful 95% of the time. So what exactly can lead to failure? Here are a few possibilities:

Peri-Implantitis: When the tissues around a dental implant become infected, the result is peri-implantitis. The early symptoms of this condition may not be too concerning, but leaving it alone for too long can cause your dental implants to come loose.
Failed Osseointegration: Normally, the implant posts join with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration. However, certain health issues can prevent osseointegration from taking place as intended.
Physical Trauma: As strong as dental implants are, they (and the tissues around them) can still be damaged if you get hit in the mouth.
